Here is the Sikkim Cucumber, Cucumis sativus var. sikkimensis. This cucumber variety is grown in the Himalayas of Sikkim and Nepal where it originates from. Sir Joseph Hooker first discovered it in the eastern Himalayas in 1848. Here is part of what he wrote about it: “So abundant were the fruits, that for days together I saw gnawed fruits lying by the natives’ paths by the thousands.” This cucumber can get as large as a small watermelon in the right conditions! We find the average size is about 8 to 10 inches long and 3.5 inches wide with an alligator like skin. when the fruits are young they look just like a regular cucumber and can be eaten the same way. Vines grow like a regular cucumber vine. good producer mid season variety. Open pollinated 60 ~ 80 days from transplant.
